Healthy Ageing of Roma Communities: Endowers, Realities, Perspectives - European-level symposium

The University of Pécs Medical School in partnership with the WHO Regional Office for Europe and in coordination with the WHO Country Office, Hungary will organize and host a European-level symposium, entitled Healthy Ageing of Roma Communities: Endowers - Realities - Perspectives.

The main objective of the event is to provide a scientific forum for the exchange of experience in promoting the health of Roma populations at community level, in accordance with:

- the new European policy framework for health and well-being (Health 2020) in general and one of its main strategic objectives concerning the reduction of health inequalities in particular; and

- the new strategic goal of the European Commission concerning healthy ageing.

The symposium will be organized in Pecs and between 27 and 29 October 2014.

Call for papers - Conference of the Society for Romanian Studies

Dear Colleagues,

Let us inform you about the conference of the Society for Romanian Studies - Doing healthcare in post-socialist Romania: structures, practices, and experiences.

This is a call for papers for a tentative panel on healthcare in post-socialist Romania at the next conference of the Society for Romanian Studies hosted by the Faculty of Political Science, the University of Bucharest (June 17-19, 2015).

Convenors: Sabina Stan (Dublin City University) and Marius Wamsiedel (University of Hong Kong)

We are looking for papers based on in-depth case studies on healthcare in Romania that link practices at the micro level with the larger context of, on the one hand, transformations of the Romanian healthcare system and, on the other, transformations in Romanian society, economy and politics after 1989.

The topics of interest include:

- neo-liberal reforms, development and healthcare

- social geographies of access to healthcare

- healthcare and citizenship

- healthcare and national and transnational mobility

- medicalization and de-medicalization in post-socialist settings

- healthcare encounters and non-clinical evaluation of patients;

- the social life of healthcare professions: socialisation, social closure and power struggles;

- the dynamic of popular, folk and professional healthcare sectors in Romania;

- healthcare work as situated activity and contested social field

- healthcare and gender, class, and ethnic inequalities

- Roma health mediation and access to healthcare

- moralities in health care provision

- emergent technologies and medical devices

The WHO Regional Office for Europe (WHO/Europe) has launched a new website on Roma health. The main goals are the followings:

- raising the awareness of the unacceptable living conditions of Roma populations, and

- dissemination of knowledge and expertise for improving their health.
